About Our Free Gyms

WHAT FOR?

Looking for a fun, supportive place to exercise your creative muscles? Now is the perfect time to dust off the old Shakespeare monologue and get ready for your next audition. 

MONTHLY

This is a monthly monologue gym―a place to get a new set of eyes on your favorite material...or to try something new. Bring in some Juliet or Richard...or Imogen or Troilus...and give those classical texts a workout!

WHO WORKS?

By limiting active participants to 10, we are able to give each student―and their text―serious attention. Participants will be chosen in each class, so if you'd like to work, bring a Shakespearean speech with you!

WHAT TO PREP

What Do I Prepare? For this class, bring in a one-minute Shakespearean Monologue (verse or prose, and sonnets are good, too!) of your choosing. Participants are chose in class.

Your Teachers

Jesse Charles Friedman is a professional actor in New York and the Director of Education at SoHo Shakes. He earned his MFA at Harvard University’s Institute for Advanced Theater Training, where he studied classical performance under David Hammond. Jesse has performed Shakespeare under the direction of Obie-winner Melia Bensussen and has worked professionally on the stages of New Orleans, Boston, New York, and Moscow. He spent two years as a Teaching Fellow at Harvard in Voice and Speech, after completing a Fulbright grant in Montevideo, Uruguay.  (He|Him)  AEA

Alex Pepperman is a theatre maker in New York City, and the Founding Artistic Director & Executive Producer of our SoHo Shakespeare Company. He holds a Masters in Theatre from Harvard University, where he specialized in Shakespeare studies (David Hammond); a BA in Creative Writing, Acting, and Business Marketing from FDU, Madison; and an AOS from AADA, NYC. He has studied Shakespeare under the tutelage of acclaimed Broadway actor Jack Wetherall, and has worked professionally on the stages of New York, Boston, and Moscow. Currently he is adapting two pieces of classical theater, directing, producing, coaching & teaching performers, and writing a new play in verse.  (He|Him)  AEA
